Decode Your 1971 Chevelle VIN #
Found when getting my chevelle there were a few things that I would have liked to known before I actually purchased my 71. The VIN # decoding is one of them, so I thought I would help you all out and give you some info. Hope this helps someone!
The VIN Number on your 1971 chevelle is located atop your dash by the firewall on the driver’s side. You can see it visibly if you look through the windshield right above the base of your windshield wiper arm. (I will add an example picture soon as I get a chance.)
Here are the numbers…. (Our example VIN #: 136371K300102)
First five digits are as follows:
13637 - ( Breaks down as 1 = Chevrolet, 36 = Series Number(in our case it will be either 31,32,33,34,35,36,67,38, which is a Chevelle, Malibu, El Camino, Monte Carlo or Nomad.) 37 = Body Style (in our case, 37 is 2 door sports coupe). Below is different model numbers just for the chevelle. (Excluding elcamino).
Model (13337 = Chevelle 6 cylinder Two door hardtop, 13369 = Chevelle 6 cylinder Four door sedan, 13437 = Chevelle 8 cylinder Two door hardtop, 13446 = Greenbrier 8 cylinder Four door wagon 9 pass, 13469 = Chevelle 8 cylinder Four door sedan, 13537 = Malibu 6 cylinder Two door hardtop, 13539 = Malibu 6 cylinder Four door hardtop, 13567 = Malibu 6 cylinder Two door convertible, 13569 = Malibu 6 cylinder Four door sedan, 13536 = Concours 6 cylinder Four door wagon 6 pass, 13637 = Malibu 8 cylinder Two door hardtop, 13639 = Malibu 8 cylinder Four door hardtop, 13667 = Malibu 8 cylinder Two door convertible, 13669 = Malibu 8 cylinder Four door sedan, 13636 = Concours 8 cylinder Four door wagon 6 pass, 13646 = Concours 8 cylinder Four door wagon 9 pass, 13836 = Concours Estate 8 cylinder Four door wagon 6 pass, 13846 = Concours Estate 8 cylinder Four door wagon 9 pass).

These are the sequence numbers (or production sequential numbers) of the line at the assembly plant.
